It was raining in Germany but Tottenhnham, missing Defoe, Dawson and Modric, started of the better team. Werder Bremen were also missing some key players mainly the defensive duo of mertesacker and Naldo. Both tall strong defender who have a good partnership, they will be missed for Werder tonight, and would be a threat at corners and
would be a challenge for crouch in the air. Tottenham Took an early lead as Assou-Ekotto played a beautiful ball down the line for Bale to run onto which he happily did and put in a first time ball across goal towards crouch who was cutting in front of the defender forcing him to make a lung for the ball but unfortunately for Pasanen he put it into his own net. If he hadn’t it seemed certain that crouch would have scored but he didn’t have to wait long to add to his Champions League tally when Van der Vaart delivered a beautiful cross and Crouch rose and directed the header brilliantly into the top corner leaving the goal keeper with no chance. After only 18minutes into their first Champions League tie and two nil up and they are taking the game to Werder Bremen.
It isn’t just van der Vaart who is looking to make a point but every Tottenham player looks to be up for the game and are looking to prove that they deserve to be there. Werder Bremen had a shout for a penalty with a handball but only a corner was given. Penalties like that have been given in the past but it would be harsh if it was given. Bale again is a constant threat for Tottenham and he stormed past the defender and had a cross/shot saved which Crouch couldn’t reach and was cleared before Jenas could get there. 35minutes in and Tottenham have the chance to make it 3-0 with a cross from Kaboul on the right missing everyone, and the ball cleared a bale got a shot away which was saved but and no one could get to the rebound.
Bremen brought on Aaron Hunt to try and get back in the match, as at the moment there is not much going there way. Aaron Lennon won a corner but it didn’t reach and it another corner which Van der Vaart whipped in to the near post and the keeper drives and punches against his defender, shaky goalkeeping but Werder go on the counter attack but Jenas puts in a timely tackle on the edge of his own box to break up the attack.
With the first half nearing an end Tottenham need to just keep possession but a wild clearance from Assou-Ekotto with the outside of his boot saw the ball go out for a throw in on the opposite side of the pitch and from the throw in Wesley crossed in and Almedia connected with a header and get a goal back. Cudicini was forced into a save but it wasn’t troubling him, will Assou-Ekotto’s rash clearance, which led to a goal, be the down fall to Tottenham tonight?
Werder came out with intention and within a few minutes Marin showed how dangerous he is with the ball and showed off his skill before smashing home a long range shot which Cudicini couldn’t get to. Werder don’t want to upset their fans and that is clear for all to see.
Robbie Keane was brought on for Van der Vaart, who has been brilliant for Tottenham tonight, as he had a calf strain, so they didn’t want to stress that anymore than needed. Keane had the chance to slip in Bale or Crouch but decided for Bale but was unable to make the pass, if he had Bale would have been straight in on goal.
Frings put in a magnificent first time ball from his own half right down the middle of the defence and Almedia chased down with Kaboul but under pressure Almedia was unable to control the shot and it went over. He could have down better and Werder could have been 3-2 up. Sine coming on Aaron Hunt has caused Tottenham some problems and Werder Bremen have been playing better with him on, but Marin has been the real threat for Bremen and he showed Tottenham again how dangerous he is with his quick feet. In the box he went one way then another and then back again twisting Corluka inside out and if he was another player may have left his left out when Corluka dived in to try and get a penalty, but instead Marin tried to make a goal scoring opportunity but it didn’t come off for him. Three quarters way through the game and the early tempo has got to both sets of teams and the play has slowed down, still both teams on the attack, but not as explosive as earlier.
The fresher man Keane had a chance to put in the ever running Bale but lingered on the ball and soon lost position. Keane has not a good game and since his move back to the club from Liverpool has never seemed to have been the same player as before. Almeida has been the focal point for Werder Bremen and when he comes deep he then looks to lay it off for Marin and when he does Bremen look like scoring and when Marin did receive the ball from Almeida Marin cut in and shot but this time couldn’t keep it on target. Borowski, A Werder favourite who signed for Bayern a few years back but didn’t settle and was sold back last year and has done well for Bremen again, has come on for the influential Wesley. Arnautovic shoots and it goes well wide and he has had a poor evening and was even booed by his own fans in the first half for his sloppy play, it’s surprising that he hasn’t been taken off. Aaron Hunt had a great chance to take the lead when he cut inside in the box but somehow was unable to keep his effort on target.
With Redknapp wanting to keep the point and not lose all three points Palacios has been brought on for Aaron Lennon as Werder have been the more positive side in the second half and Lennon was quiet on the right tonight. Bale kept making runs but the passes just were unable to find him. With Arnautovic having such a poor game it is surprising that the Werder Bremen manager decided to take off Almedia for Wagner and not Arnautovic. Bale the constant threat for Spurs puts in a ball across goal but the defender got a touch and was cleared as only a touch was needed for there to be a goal, the last 10 minutes of the match have been open and anyone could have stolen a victory.
Bremen had a few shots but the defence stood firm and blocked any that came in, but with a free kick on the 83rd minute wasted a corner was delivered in but Tottenham again stood firm and again Spurs cleared their lines and went to attack Tottenham. Assou-Ekotto tried to find crouch but it was a poor cross and was easily cleared. It has been Werder on the attack and Tottenham countering when they can. Harry will take the point but on the 86th minute with Tottenham on the attack, palaces puts in crouch and with it looking like he will score puts over the keepers legs but doesn’t keep it on target and it’s well wide.
Tottenham got a free kick on the 91st minute from a foul on Assou-Ekotto and Kaboul smashes it and that and the rebound was blocked. With that not much else attack wise came and the referee on the 93rd minute calls it full time and Werder Bremen pull back a draw from being 2-0 down.
Some spurs fans may feel disappointed because of the great start Tottenham had but a draw away from home in the Champions League is not a bad result and is something that should be taken with pride, as with it being their first Champions League group game against a team that has a good wealth of European football the draw is a good result. But with Tottenham have put in all the effort they could, how will the mid week games in the Champions League affect their performances in the premiership?
