Barcelona’s winning streak has come to an end after the drew with hard working Sporting Gijon. Sporting Gijon took the lead and it never looked like it was going to be Barcelona that was going to score first. The pitch defiantly didn’t suit Barça, and if the home side decided to have the grass long for that reason, it was a great trick to use, but Barça were unable to play the quick passing football, and you could see the ball bobbling around as it was being passed around. But Sporting Gijon closed down and pressed the whole time, and with Barcelona playing slightly differently than normal, Barça didn’t look like the all dominant have they have the past 17 games. Gijon took the lead through David Barral on the 16th minute. Barcelona tried but could get through a very organised Gijon defense and midfield. It wasnt untill the 80th minute that Barcelona were able to break the dead lock and it was something special from David Villa, his 18th of the season, as he chipped the goal keeper with a nice curling shot. No matter how much they tried they couldn’t get a second, and you could see the disappointment of not being able to keep the winning streak going.
Sporting Gijon have shown everyone that Barcelona arent footballing Gods and are able to be held and nearly beaten, but a longer grass pitch and a strict defensive showing from both defence and midfield is needed, But Barca’s next game is against Arsenal at the Emirates, with a beautiful pitch and a team that likes to play football, so it will be interesting to see what the outcome is going to be.
