The draw for the Champions League will be drawn at 4.30 in Monaco today and even thought Arsenal had to qualify through the play off they are still seeded in pot 1 due to their coefficient ranking. Many may wonder what this is, and you can find out if you follow this link, but for those that are too lazy to click the link to go to another page here is a short answer.
“The club coefficient rankings are based on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The rankings determine the seeding of each club in all UEFA competition draws.”
Here is the seeding for the Champions League draw:
Pot 1: Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Porto, Inter Milan, Manchester United, Real Madrid
Pot 2: AC Milan, Benfica, CSKA Moscow, Lyon, Marseille, Shakhtar Donestsk, Valencia, Villarreal
Pot 3: Ajax, Basel, Bate Borisov, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, Manchester City, Olympiacos, Zenit St Petersburg
Pot 4: Apoel FC, Borussia Dortmund, Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, Napoli, Oyelul Galati, Trabzonspor, Viktoria Plzen
Teams from the same country can not be drawn together at this stage, so Manchester City could be facing Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Porto, Inter Milan or Real Madrid, now with those names if City could choose to face one that they feel they could beat, I would guess Porto would be on a par with City, but with Nasri joining the likes of Agüero, Tevez, Silva and Dzeko, teams such as Inter Milan and Bayern Munich may not be looking forward to the possibility of facing the blue half of Manchester. The worse case scenario for City would be Barcelona, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.
Worse case scenario for the other English clubs would be facing the likes of AC Milan, Lyon, Marseille or Valencia from Pot 2, Bayer Leverkusen, Zenit and Ajax from Pot 3 and Borussia Dortmund, Napoli or Dinamo Zagreb from Pot 4 or even Viktoria Plzen who in the play-off stage looked like they could cause an upset in the group stages.
Needless to say this season’s Champions League looks to be an exciting one and I personally can’t wait for it to get started!
