For Chelsea and Andre Villas-Boas tonight is do or die. Lose against Valencia and Chelsea will be out of the Champions League and AVB could be out of a job. Now I hope that doesn’t happen as Chelsea will never progress if they keep getting rid of managers. No doubt Roman Abramovich will no be happy with his club plying its trade in the Europa League but he can’t be rash and sack the manager as he is trying to rebuild the team.
Poor Away Form
Things started off well for Chelsea winning the opening game against Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at home with goals from David Luiz and Juan Mata. Chelsea only managed a draw away to Valencia but they took the lead through Lampard with Valencia salvaging a point with a penalty on the 87rd minute which Soldado converted. Chelsea came back strong n theor next home game demolishing Genk 5-0 with goals from Raul Meireles, a double from Fernando Torres and Ivanovic and Kalou with the other two. The return fixture though is when the problems started with a draw away to Genk.
Chelsea had again taken the lead this time through Ramires but Genk leveled through Belgium forward Jelle Vossen. Chelsea then went to Germany to play Bayer Leverkusen and their poor away form went against them losing to Leverkusen 2-1. Just like in all the other games Chelsea took the lead but were unable to hang on to it. Drogba opened the scoring on the 48th minute, but Derdiyok equalized and then Friedrich scored the winning, one which really can be put down to Cech’s poor decision making pulling his hand away at the last minute and in the end Chelsea have been made to pay or their poor away from, not winning one of their away games.
Tomorrow Manchester United and Manchester City find themselves in the same predicament as Chelsea and by the end of tomorrow Arsenal could be the only English team left in the Champions League.
