The transfer window may be open but it mustn’t seem like it if you are a Man United fan. Yes they’ve signed Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell but apart from that I haven’t heard much on who else is coming in.

United may have only missed out on the title on the last day of the season, well last few seconds of the season, but I think it is fair to say that they were still in the title race thanks to City’s mistakes, rather than it being purely down to their own football and results. It seemed clear that United needed to bolster their squad with talent, and needed to do so quickly with City looking like they could dominate the League much like United have down for the past 20 years.

In a summer where United fans were hoping to see big signings they have had to see more players leave the club than come in. That may be in the shape of loan moves and free transfers but when players want to leave, it always leaves a bitter taste behind. Just mention Ferguson about Paul Pogba. Another promising youngster may be on his way out as Ezekiel Fryers is rumoured to be joining Tottenham, Fabio has gone on loan to QPR and will be joined by fan favourite Ji-Sung Park has been sold to the London based club.

Dimitar Berbatov has also made it clear that he is looking to move on from the club, having stated that if he isn’t going to be played regularly then it is in his and the clubs best interest to sell him. With plays wanting and leaving the club and missing out on signing Eden Hazard, it amazes me that Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva are joining PSG without so much of a bid from United. Ibrahimovic would be a huge acquisition for any Premiership side as would Thiago Silva. Luka Modric also looks set to leave Tottenham and although it seemed last year United were interested in the player it looks that Modric has his eyes set only on Madrid.

I remember a time when players had their eyes set on a move to United. Now they have their eyes set on Madrid, or Barça and now City. United have good players at the club. They used to have great players at the club, some are still there, but they are the same ones and they are getting on. Ferguson has always managed to make champions out of players, but it would help him if he had the funds to compete with Man City, Real Madrid and PSG and this is where the realization starts to kick in. United can’t compete any more. United fans are going to have to start facing some facts that Arsenal fans are still dealing with. How are the transfers of Modric, Thiago Silva and Ibrahimovic going on with United not getting a look in? 10 years ago, even 5 years ago United would have been all over this.

United now have ageing, but still quality, players and over priced prospects that haven’t come good. It is clear why United fans are worried. In goal De Gea looked to be finding his feet and Lindegaard is a good keeper, but good is not enough, they need GREAT goalkeepers. The same is to be said of the defence. If Vidic stays injury free he will be the rock of old, but Ferdinand is in the twilight of his career and Jones and Smalling are again good, but not great. A replacement for Evra needs to be resolved and at the right back position they need to sign a player for the now and the foreseeable future.

In midfield United have quality, but they need some depth. On the wings United are fine, but centrally they could do with some bolstering. Scholes can’t keep pulling shit out of the bag forever! Is Cleverley going to step up? Is it going to be Anderson? There were faint rumour of Moutinho, but it seems he is going to end up at Spurs as a replacement for the Madrid bound Modric.

Since the Glaziers have been involved in the club things have progressively gotten worse. City have beaten them to transfers and now a club in the French league is able to attract top quality players. The Bundesliga is growing, Madrid and Barcelona are the world’s top two clubs by a clear mile and Juventus managed to steal away one of their tip youngsters for free.

United were once seen as one of the best clubs in the world. Well times move fast in football and if United don’t get the cheque book out soon, they will find themselves as the noisy neighbours next door, Not City!
