Marseille are looking to sell players to reduce their wage bill and recoup some money they have spent down the years.
Marseille have already sold Alou Diarra to West Ham and Chelsea are seemingly on the verge of signing Cesar Azpilicueta and it seems Marseille are looking to offload a few more players.
Marseille chairman Vincent Labrune spoke to France Football and said “For the next three weeks, as it has been since the start of the transfer window, our objective is very clear – we must sell players” adding “It is a major shareholders’ instruction. The objectives set by the shareholders about selling are drastic. We are trying to sell to reduce the wage bill”
“We have three players we have agreed to let leave – Cesar Azpilicueta, Stephane Mbia and either Loic Remy or Andre Ayew.”
“However, we have changed our mind about Loic. We will see, but we would like to keep him. However, it is difficult to have a definitive position.”
As mentioned before Cesar Azpilicueta is being chased by Chelsea but it also seems that Stephane Mbia could soon be on his way too.
“If Chelsea makes a fair offer for Aspi, we will let him leave. If there is a good offer for Stephane Mbia, we will let him leave too. We are working in good terms both with Cesar and Stephane.”
So that leaves Loic Remy or Andre Ayew left that could be on the way out. Now although Vincent Labrune has talked about players they are wiling to leave if they need to reduce their wage bill and are looking to recoup some money, if a good enough deal comes in for some of their best player who is to say they would say no. If a club came in for Nicolas N’Koulou, Mathieu Valbuena or Steve Mandanda and it was an offer too good to turn down then Marseille could be a shell of a club that they were.
Tottenham are looking for a goalkeeper and a striker so I don’t see why they wouldn’t go in for Mandanda and they have linked with Loic Remy of the years. Mandanda would be a brilliant singing for any Premier League club, and I mean that. For me he is better than what Manchester United have in De Gea and Lindegaard, is better than what Tottenham have and could displace Cech or Szczesny.
It is a shame for the club that they are now in this position, but it doesn’t come as a huge surprise as over the years they have spent big, but now are in a place where they are not winning or competing for trophies.
So where will Remy, Ayew and Mbia end up? Newcastle need another striker and if they are able to get a good price for Remy then he could well joining the French revolution that Alan Pardew has going on at Newcastle, and he can play on the wings too. Mbia could do well at Arsenal or AC Milan who would need to bolster their defence. I would be very surprised if no one enquired how much Marseille would want for Mathieu Valbuena He is a fast, explosive winger and one that most clubs in the Premiership would be a more dangerous club with him in it. Liverpool or Newcastle could use his talents very effectively.
With other clubs looking to do the same as Marseille, but probably just not be as vocal about it, it is clear to see that in the next coming weeks we are going to have a great transfer window with a lot of deal and a whole lot more rumours.
