Today The FA banned and fined former England captain John Terry for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand last season.

Via the FA’s official website“An Independent Regulatory Commission has today [Thursday 27 September 2012] founda charge of misconduct against John Terry proven and has issued a suspension for a period of four matches and a fine of £220,000, pending appeal.”

“The Football Association charged Mr Terry on Friday 27 July 2012 with using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand and which included a reference to colour and/or race contrary to FA Rule E3[2] in relation to the Queens Park Rangers FC versus Chelsea FC fixture at Loftus Road on 23 October 2011.”

While some have raised question as to why it is only a four game ban when Luis Suarez was banned for eight, I am pleased that the FA have actually done something about this. Though it would have been nicer for it to have been sooner rather than later the FA held of their investigate at the request of the Crown Prosecution Service and John Terry’s representatives awaiting the result of the criminal trial. It is good to see the FA take action and hopefully this will help rebuild some bridges that have been broken and repair any damaged to old wounds that have been reopened.

As I wrote a few days ago, I don’t believe he is racist, but he did make a racist comment. It is frustrating to me that some are unable to distinguish between the two, and that is from both sides of the fence.

You do not have to be something to make a comment that can cause offence. I am not sexiest, although I could make a sexist comment. If I made comment at work and someone over heard it and was offended by it then my workplace would take action. It is the offence caused and the fact that millions have seen it and know about it then it is only right the FA should take action.

I was disappointed that the justice system failed. In my eyes they have. They have opened the door for many narrow minded racist people to say things and have a poster child for it. I am sure Terry doesn’t want that either. The FA were a little ambiguous with the wording of the charges that John Terry has been found guilty of. The wording “abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour”  and “which included a reference to colour and/or race contrary” are vague enough that it can be argued that he is not being found guilty of racially abuing Anton Ferdinadn and so are not going against the judgement of the courts. So when you hear people saying how ludicrous it is that the FA have more power than the courts, please bring that up.

Terry earns a lot more than the national average, so if he was found guilty in court the £2500 fine would have been pocket change, and I mean that literally, he could have got a card out and asked the judge he if had a card reader on him. £220k is a lot of money. It is a huge amount to you or I, but for someone who earns over £100k a week, it doesn’t seem all that severe. A months wage his a much bigger fine.

John Terry has two weeks, 14 days, to appeal and I assume he will. He has fought this long and hard it would seem strange to give up now. It is like bluffing and hand in poker. You thought you had a decent hand to start, you raised, you was seen, you hoped for the river would be a ray of hope, you raised some more, you was seen and raised…….What do you do next John?

  1. I wonder if his appeal will change the verdict. Hope Terry, Ferdinand and the rest of the PL can put this incident behind them soon!
