According to reports in France, L’equipe and most notably Montpellier themselves, the transfer of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to Newcastle is done and dusted.
This would be fantastic news for all Newcastle fans if it wasn’t for their poor performances and League position and the possible departure of Fabricio Coloccini.
This season Newcastle have had their injuries but most of those injuries have been to the more attacking players leaving Newcastle somewhat flat in attack. As Newcastle fans knew at the beginning of the season, a few defenders where needed to build on the achievements of the season before. So when the transfer window closed, Newcastle fans feared the worst, and the worst happened. With Newcastle not scoring, it highlighted their defence frailties.
This January Transfer window has seen two good defenders come in. Firstly Mathieu Debuchy from Lille and now Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier, and also rumours of another young French player, Massadio Haidara from Nancy, coming in.
This would be better is they hadn’t have lost Demba Ba this transfer window, and if they don’t sign a striker, or a goal scoring midfielder, then things could get worse as the season goes ahead.
The signing of Yanga-Mbiwa is also marred by the fact that Montpellier Chairman has warned Newcastle fans that he is only going to leave them in a year’s time. Not very encouraging, but again, it could just be sour grapes after losing Giroud last summer, Mapou now and possibly more stars of his Montpellier team.
There are also rumours of interest from Newcastle for yet another Ligue 1 star. Yoan Gouffran of Bordeaux has sin months left on his deal and according to French paper Sud Ouest, Newcastle tabled a bid of €750,000 but they are holding out for €1m. Gouffran is a pacey player, who likes to dribble, is strong and can hold up the ball well. He sounds like a player that Newcastle would be interested in, but the problem is, he could be a Ben Arfa buy or an Obertan buy. Like any transfer it would be a game, but for a million, a cheap one.
